What is glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases which in most cases produce increased pressure within the eye. If the disease is left untreated it can lead to permanent damage of the optic nerve and result in vision loss that can develop into blindness. This makes it important that the disease is detected, diagnosed and treated at an early stage so that your doctor can help preserve your vision.

Glaucoma can affect people in all ages but are more common among the elderly. Around 2% of all 40-year olds and 6% of all people above the age of 75 is affected by glaucoma. Furthermore, in Sweden there are currently around 200.000 people who have been affected by glaucoma. That is around 2% of Sweden’s combined population and within the industrialized world around 50% of those who suffer from glaucoma is not aware of their disease.
There is currently no cure for glaucoma but the disease can be slowed or arrested by treatment. Your doctor decides the treatment and he/she keeps track of your condition by performing eye pressure measurements
